after this crap, 32 is going to feel like a heat wave.

hard to believe that i came into the world at about this time of year, as little tolerance as i have for it. even the early morning sky gave evidence to the arctic conditions... that particular delft shade of blue that only arrives with polar winds.

plus, when you feel the cold indoors, it's just wrong... and have to wear socks to bed... and bury your head under the covers to keep the top of your head from chilling.

time to start thinking about shorts weather.

soon... soon.

an evil twist of fate manifested last night. not long after warming up the car, leaving the car park, that tell-tale shriek of belts under the bonnet reminded me that i may have forgotten to button up something. even though all systems have been "go" for the past three weeks, something protested.

sure enough, after stirring in the AM and firing up the ignition, cruelly, not a sound came from the engine bay. curiosity getting the better of me, i stole a glance underhood.

uh-huh... floppy alternator belts.

i took the chance and drove to my usual haunts before work, arriving early to do the necessary tightening. even in broad daylight, my fingers quickly turned crimson and stiff.

sumbitch.

well, i'm just cranky. mental exhaustion from my twenty-hour Monday notwithstanding, i launched into the book that's been festering in my bag for months, after work. TheJungle by UptonSinclair. there's a reason i've been avoiding it... like, excessive reality. nearly a hundred years-old tale of immigrants sucked into the belly of the meat-packing-industry whale... the foulness of the climate, the criminal abuse of human beings, the environment of treachery and chemical-trickery with food, the filth, and the hypocrisy. and the worst part? not a thing has really changed. people are still crushed under the heel of industry for its own amusement and profit, people still blindly buy excrement disguised as nutrition, and it's all legal.

now that's cold.
