the road. long. and winding.

this will be a landmark day, of sorts.

i've bullshitted myself (and others for far too long). today, the passport gets into motion.

i've had the application (and many others) for months... waiting on the inspiration, encouragement, whatever the fuck. this is the time for action.

a buxom co-worker was sharing the photos she and her husband took in Amsterdam, early this past spring. it helped send me over the edge. they'd only planned to go to Vegas, and found out it was cheaper to go abroad... without any prior interest in the Netherlands. spur-of-the-moment. that concept is appealing.

so, now i must get on with it.

in the past, Miss Jane had nodded with some interest whenever i'd mentioned passports... never showing any burning desire about destinations. waiting for me to lead the way. as in most things.

well, i can't sign her name on the application. but i sure as hell can sign mine.

she did surprise me, this morning when i arrived back here in LimboLand... she'd done some baking, using the old recipe for a coffee cake of my Granny's that i'd found this weekend past.

the flavor took me back, quickly. she may not have had water in her house until the sixties, nothing more than an electric range and a woodstove... but that lady could cook. in massive quantities. and made the strongest coffee known to man, before Seattle got involved.

so, when i wrote "coffee" cake, that's exactly what it meant. black as midnight. filling. dope to the veins.

this was a woman whose few trips outside her door included that three-year stay in midwest Canada in the 1930's. now that was getting away from it all.

time to pack it up.

if nothing else, i plan to uphold my tradition, after the sun goes down... following in the footsteps of last week's appraisal of Fuller'sESB... YoungsRamRod... FlyingFishPorter... VictoryStormKing. readying my tastebuds (and braincells) for what OldBlighty has to offer.

can't keep the passport blank, for long.
