the calm before the storm

the furnace just shut off. that warm air from the vent, blowing on my feet, was feeling mighty good, too. never mind that the furnace, by rights, shouldn't even be on this early, since Fall doesn't even begin until SATURDAY.

according to the photo i took of the thermometer at the time, it was not much more than a month ago that it was cresting one hundred degrees. goddamn Virginia weather.

i know i'm squeezing hard for words when i have to start writing about the weather. it's not that i don't have tons of things to relate, either.

this time, last week, i was probably just about to touch ground in Long Beach for the third occasion this year... just a lot later than i'd been expecting. according to the printed itinerary.

when i read that, and see it lit up onscreen, that sounds a bit la-dee-dah.
like, "oooh, mister globetrotter". but that seems to be where my sanity resides, these days.

there's plenty more about that on the way.

spinning the calendar back even further, to this time, last year, the possibility of having my feet on the west coast hadn't yet occurred to me. that was when i'd about reached my lowest ebb, just before the inevitable split went down.

that's why everything else is getting pushed out, tonight: tomorrow, it's time to sit with a mediator with my soon-to-be-ex-, and begin the process of putting it all to rest.

what irony. iTunes, just this minute, spooled up "Hey, Lloyd, I'm Ready To Be Heartbroken" by Camera Obscura. i suppose that's better than the Supremes' "Where Did Our Love Go". stylistically, that is.

since the air went out of our relationship, we've retired to different corners of the state, with little contact... and what little there's been has been pretty cordial, if resigned and a little sad.

tomorrow night, it will be interesting to see what the mood will be, then.

right now, i'm going to replace those thoughts with those of dimly-lit corridors in the Queen Mary, the patchwork of the continent from thirty-thousand feet, Sunset Boulevard, palm trees, the sunset in the Pacific, and a pair of green eyes looking at me when i first awake.

that'll keep me warm until the mess is over with.
