How I Spent My Independence Day Vacation

Senator Webb,

I claim to be no political scholar, but i strive to be informed on events, current and past... especially those that set the path of this country. Quite literally "walking in the footsteps" of framers of the Constitution (James Madison), inspired patriots (Patrick Henry, Jack Jouett), and pioneers of our political will (Thomas Jefferson) here in central Virginia, learning respect for the principles and fundamental wisdom that makes us what we are is unavoidable.

This Independence Day morning's reading brought my attention to this passage from the Declaration:

"He has obstructed the Administration of Justice by refusing his Assent to Laws for establishing Judiciary Powers. ... For taking away our Charters, abolishing our most valuable Laws and altering fundamentally the Forms of our Governments."

Though this particular declaration involves the tyranny of British rule at the time of its writing, the parallels to this very day are staggering.

For me, President Bush's arbitrary commutation of Lewis "Scooter" Libby's sentence, an appointed member of his own Administration (who may very well be complicit in other treasonous acts, within) was the Line In The Sand--that fateful, final addition to the House Of Cards--and, merely the most recent in a litany of abhorrent destructive acts to America and its legacy. Standing silent is no longer an option.

Bearing witness to the impeachment proceedings of two Presidents, one for illegal acts against opponents, the other daring to lie to Congress, even they pale in comparison to the record of the past six years: the questionable involvement in Iraq; the perversion of the right to vote, sale of natural resources to the highest bidders; politicizing the Judicial system and toying with "inalienable rights"; ignoring the will of Congress and the People with "signing statements". Any one of these offenses would have eclipsed previous claims for Impeachment.

Your colleagues in the House of Representatives have stated, publicly, that this is "off the table"... and one can only imagine that their motivation concerns the tenuous wish to win future elections, by default.

But, I hope that you find within you and those of which you find counsel the strength of will to consider such a painfully necessary step to right the errant course that George W. Bush embraces.

Thank you for your leadership, patriotism, and determination.
