check engine

this is truly disquieting... in a metaphysical sense.

just before dousing all of the lights and the power buttons, very early this morning, i thumbed through the listings for TCM. there is supposed to be a classic anime series airing, and i thought i'd see if anything was upcoming. no... but a light-hearted poltergiest story was about to come on: Topper. if one could call a poltergiest "fun-loving", outside of "Peeves". fun-loving, and still able to mix and consume cocktails, too.

i'd never seen it, so i cued it up to record after i'd hit the sheets.

and wouldn't you know it, the theme of that screen gem was so similar to last night's Kurosawa, that the coincidence was unsettling: do something before you kick off. it was an interesting wake-up call, sitting in my flannels with my last coffee cold in the cup.

so i took the Miata out for a rare spin.

it wasn't as ready as i was for a change in routine... as two miles out, the "check engine" idiot light illuminated, then faded, then shone again. all systems go... no death-rattles, gauges normal, no shuddering lope of motor. until i pulled onto the platform, there were no calamitous indicators, until the steam wafted through the seams of the bonnet.

shitfuck.

i think i'm going to have to work to make these adventures happen.

and check my damned engine.

with a pitcher of Manhattans.
