celestial season

earlier this afternoon, whilst burning one in the shade of what i refer to as the Bus Stop to Nowhere (it's the smoking shed behind work... but, yeah, it's supposed to be a bus stop... so the catalog said), it was obviously Migration Day for the biggest flock of starlings i've ever seen. covering every square foot of grass on the terracing above the flood plain to the nearby "creek," they were certainly a nervy bunch: the slightest movement would send them airborne as one... one thousand. once aloft, they would swarm from one end of the horizon to the other, the slower-reacting ones (the other thousand or so) creating the trail to this giant mass of swirling dots.

it reminded me of science class in elementary school... our first experience with a microscope, pond water under glass. into focus came the very same effect... amoebas, a loose amalgamation of tiny black dots without a defining border that held the whole thing together, all moving together aimlessly, but collectively.

at least an amoeba doesn't have the added danger of mummifying you with mountains of poop.

hell of a way to get back into the groove of writing, innit?

as it's been, even finding a path to my computer at home has been impossible. Miss Jane's obsession has been repainting the boudoir... which wouldn't be a problem, except for the strata that's built up on the walls in the fifty-plus years this little cottage has been standing. sheetrock-wallpaper-veneered woodgrained panelling-wallpaper, that's the burden the room had been carrying... the last nasty pink bordello pattern was the last straw. unfortunately, the panelling was even worse... unless you like mobile home style.

so, a weekend's repainting becomes a month of 8-hour-a-day weekends... with moving furniture daily, spackle dust and bent nails underfoot. the furniture, naturally has to go someplace. into the drawing-record-computer room. no room for a path in or out.

goodbye, updating...

and hello, work.

it bores the living shit out of me to even write that.

well, there was the eclipse, BendItLikeBeckham, and the radio show i couldn't find the substitute for... the more positive defining moments.

and the year rockets its way to conclusion.

i'm saving up my vacation days.

maybe i'll follow that swarm.
