a few years ago, i had the pleasure and opportunity to interview Ansel Cridland, lead singer of the renowned roots reggae band, the Meditations. in the course of our conversation, we reflected on those things that bring people together... those from completely different walks of life, geographic location, and language. we concluded that even if you were ignorant of those things, there were three common elements upon which every person could find common ground, and reach understanding without words: food... music... and soccer. i find it extremely fitting, even amid the horror of this story, that "football" is the one and only positive thing that has brought the warring peoples of Iraq together in the past four years. even the murderous fundamentalist bastards, here and there, couldn't fuck that up. |
