Why Get Up?

Travelling back on the twisties from Charlottesville, last light fading behind the Blue Ridge... the Fabulous Thunderbirds belly-ached from the radio:

"This Old World's Gone Crazy,

And I've Seen Enough.

I'm Gonna Sleep Froever,

Why Get Up?"

...one of the more depressing phrases in blues music, surely.

But paced, progressed, and harmonized in such a good-natured way, you thought, "bad day... oh, well." And left it at that.

Not that this is a theme for the waking hours.

Feeling too sassy and chill for all that weight.

Belly full of cheese fries, North Carolina barbecue, amber ale and Cuban salsa. Took in some excellent ritmo latino, courtesy of Richmond-based Havana Son. Heavy on Buena Vista Social Club, perhaps, but crafted for the end of a scorcher of a day. It's all about rhythm (since most percussion is african and latin based), but the horns... crisp to the point of slicing air like ginzu. Harmonizing where the voice won't go. Makes you wonder what James Brown would've sounded like teamed with that kind of backup... keep Maceo, of course.

The Big Payback, for getting the plane ticket refunds, passing off the final cut for the bumpersticker design, and the prints from two weeks ago. No radio Friday, so I got loose in town. No impulse buys at the junk store... even the tacky stuff is out ot town in the summer. While briefly orbiting the station, got propositioned by Mountain Rasta to DJ a party, next weekend. Not unless they've got good needles for the turntables, this time. Love to make the music come out loud, and dancing commence, though.

Swapping the Rick bass for something 6-string has been on my mind.

Hard to practice fat strings when there's no band... too hard on the glassware to plug in at home. Plus, I've got the Mosrite... still in pieces. Almost two-and-a-half years without playing. But the itch is still there.

Gimme.

Another little dividend for Friday... wet streets whilst gliding into the homestretch. Rain for the garden. Jah Provide.

Gonna Sleep for a while,

But that's Why I Get Up.

Monterey... what I like about the south.
